Why is it important to have a social life?
“Social wellbeing refers to our ability to interact successfully within a community and throughout a variety of cultural contexts while showing respect for ourselves and others” (Washington State University Wellbeing, 2012). It can be seen that a social life influences largely on the mental health of an individual and thus, plays a fundamental part in one’s overall wellbeing. A social life gives people the opportunity to interact with individuals and essentially build relationships and friendships. It is known to improve one’s communication skills as well as help people overcome behaviours such as shyness and loneliness (Ask.com, 2014). Accordingly, it can be seen that an individual’s mind and body suffers, without strong and positive relationships in their lives (Psychology today, 2014).
Social club
A social club refers to a group of people that form together and participate in activities. A social club within the school community is a great example of how teachers can interact with their work colleagues in a non-professional environment. An example of a social club activity during the hours of school is a weekly morning tea where everyone brings in a plate of food to share. A roster could be designed so that different staff rooms are assigned to bring in a plate each week. Other ideas include meeting up in the common room on a Friday afternoon or perhaps everyone putting in money in order to participate in an activity outside of school. For instance, drinks at a pub, bowling, paint ball, dinner etc.
